The Greenfield International Stadium — popularly known as The Sports Hub, Trivandrum — is Kerala’s pride in modern sporting infrastructure. Built on the DBOT (Design, Build, Operate, Transfer) model, it holds a unique distinction as India’s first fully eco-friendly stadium.

Today, the venue is riding strong momentum. In late January, it hosted the final T20I of the India vs. New Zealand series, where India sealed a 4–1 win in front of a packed house. The night India posted 271/5 and the crowd stayed loud till the final over reminded everyone why this ground feels special.

Modern. Green. Multi-sport ready.

Greenfield International Stadium Layout and Architecture

Greenfield is not just a cricket stadium. It is a multi-purpose arena designed to meet both ICC (cricket) and FIFA (football) standards. That dual-purpose planning defines its structure.

The stadium is divided into four clearly defined operational zones.

Functional Zones

1. North Zone

Dedicated primarily to cricket operations. It houses the main pavilion, player dressing rooms, match officials’ rooms, and premium seating areas.

2. East Zone

Configured mainly to support football events. Seating angles and access routes here reflect FIFA standards.

3. South Zone

Integrated with lifestyle amenities. This side connects to a shopping mall and a large food court complex, making it more than just a match-day destination.

4. West Zone

Features additional spectator seating and general access facilities.

5. The “Greenfield” Identity

Though largely a concrete bowl structure, the stadium is surrounded by lush greenery. From the upper tiers, you can see patches of trees and open land around Karyavattom, giving the venue its name.

The two-tier arrangement ensures unobstructed sightlines across all sections.

Greenfield International Capacity

Seating Capacity: Approximately 50,000 to 55,000

This makes it one of the largest stadiums in South India.

The two-tier seating configuration eliminates pillars inside viewing areas. Even from the back rows of the upper deck, the pitch remains clearly visible.

During full-house matches, the stadium feels loud yet organized — not chaotic.

Gates and Access Points

The stadium is located in Karyavattom, about 15 km from Thiruvananthapuram city center, near the University of Kerala campus.

1. Gate 1 (Main Entrance)

Reserved for players, match officials (PMOA), and VVIP entry.

2. Gate 2 & Gate 3

Primary entry points for general ticket holders approaching from the NH-66 (Kovalam–Kazhakootam bypass) side.

3. Gate 4

Typically used for media personnel and select premium stand access.

4. Transport Connectivity

Kazhakootam Railway Station is the nearest rail head, roughly 3 km away.

On major match days, the KSRTC runs special “Chain Services” buses from East Fort and Thampanoor to ease traffic congestion.

Private vehicles are common, but early arrival is advised due to limited parking capacity.

Modern & Eco-Friendly Facilities

Greenfield was designed with sustainability at its core.

1. LED Floodlights

In late 2025, the stadium upgraded to advanced LED floodlights. These meet 4K broadcast standards and provide uniform lighting with reduced energy consumption.

2. Rainwater Harvesting

The entire structure integrates rainwater collection systems. Harvested water is reused for ground maintenance and other utilities, reinforcing its eco-friendly status.

3. Indoor Sports Hub

Beyond cricket and football, the complex includes facilities for squash, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, and an Olympic-size swimming pool.

It truly operates as a year-round sports hub.

4. Sub-Air Drainage System

Kerala’s tropical rains can be intense. The stadium’s high-end drainage system ensures rapid water clearance, reducing delays even after heavy showers.

Ticket Pricing (2026 Season)

For the recent India–New Zealand T20I series, ticket pricing followed an accessible structure.

1. Student Gallery

  • Designated Sections
  • ₹250 (Bulk booking only)

2. Upper Tier

  • General Stands
  • ₹500

3. Lower Tier

  • Premium / Pitch-Side Seating
  • ₹1,200

4. Executive Lounge

  • Hospitality Sections
  • ₹5,000 – ₹10,000

Digital ticketing is handled via platforms like Ticketgenie and BookMyShow.

Physical redemption of online tickets is mandatory at designated counters before match day.

Affordable pricing has been a deliberate effort by the ICC and Kerala Cricket Association to widen access.

Prohibited Items and Guidelines

Security protocols are strict and consistent with BCCI standards.

Strictly Banned: Backpacks, power banks, coins, umbrellas, helmets, and outside food or water.

Allowed: Mobile phones and wallets only.

1. Parking

General parking is available at the University of Kerala Karyavattom Campus grounds. However, it fills quickly on big match days.

Arriving at least three hours before the toss is advisable.

2. Connectivity

Mobile data can become unstable during full-house events. It is wise to download digital tickets offline before entering.

Major Events (2026)

1. January 31, 2026

Hosted the 5th T20I between India and New Zealand. India scored 271/5, with Ishan Kishan hitting a century, winning the match by 46 runs and sealing the series 4–1.

2. T20 World Cup 2026

While knockout matches are set for Mumbai and Kolkata, Greenfield remains an important venue for group-stage and warm-up fixtures.

3. Kerala Cricket League (KCL)

The stadium serves as the primary base for Kerala’s domestic T20 league.

Conclusion

Greenfield International Stadium is not just about capacity or aesthetics. It represents a different model of stadium development in India — eco-conscious, multi-purpose, and community-driven.

From hosting international cricket to nurturing state-level leagues, it balances ambition with accessibility.

In Kerala’s capital, this stadium stands as proof that modern design and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand — without compromising on spectacle.
