The Sawai Mansingh Stadium (SMS) in Jaipur — the heart of the Pink City — is one of India’s most historic cricket venues. Established in 1969 and named after Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, the ground carries both royal heritage and modern cricketing energy.

It serves as the beloved home of the Rajasthan Royals. As of early 2026, the stadium has undergone a ₹10 crore modernization drive focused on safety upgrades and improved infrastructure. These changes ensure it remains ready for IPL 2026 and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup fixtures.

Despite newer mega-stadiums across India, SMS retains a charm that feels distinctly Jaipur.

1. Sawai Mansingh Stadium Layout and Architecture

Unlike towering, ultra-modern arenas, Sawai Mansingh Stadium features a traditional low-rise design. The open structure allows views of the surrounding cityscape and distant hills.

The architecture blends historic concrete stands with newer steel structures added during renovations. The result is a stadium that feels old-school yet updated.

Key Stands and Ends

1. North End (Garh Ganesh Temple End)

Named for the famous hilltop temple visible from parts of the stadium. This side offers a unique Jaipur backdrop during day matches.

2. South End (Van Vihar Colony End)

This is the primary pavilion side, housing team facilities and VIP areas.

3. President’s Box & VVIP Lounge

Located inside the main pavilion. These sections provide premium seating with climate-controlled lounges.

4. East & West Stands

These are the largest public seating zones. During the 2025–2026 upgrades, temporary steel stands were added to the East side to accommodate increased demand for IPL and T20 World Cup matches.

5. New Media Block

A recently renovated, modern broadcast facility for international media and commentators.

The ground dimensions are balanced, and the pitch has historically favored batters, though spinners often come into play in evening matches.

2. Sawai Mansingh Stadium Capacity

Permanent Capacity: Approximately 23,185–24,000

Expanded Capacity (With Temporary Stands): Up to 30,000

For major tournaments like IPL and T20 World Cup games, additional steel seating structures are installed to increase attendance.

While smaller compared to some modern stadiums, the compact layout creates a strong, intimate atmosphere. Crowd noise carries clearly across the field.

3. Gates and Access Points

The stadium is located at Janpath, Lalkothi, near Rambagh Circle — one of Jaipur’s central landmarks.

Main Gate

Reserved for players, VVIPs, and match officials.

Public Gates

Multiple entry points are spread around the perimeter. Gates usually open three hours before the match begins.

Metro Access

The Jaipur Metro (Pink Line) is one of the most efficient ways to reach the venue. Sindhi Camp and Chandpole stations are commonly used, though many fans prefer local cabs or auto-rickshaws for the final stretch.

Parking

On-site parking is extremely limited. Fans are advised to use designated parking zones at Rambagh Circle or Nagar Nigam Lal Kothi and walk to the stadium.

Arriving early is strongly recommended during IPL nights.

4. Sawai Mansingh Stadium Modern Facilities

The Rajasthan government and Rajasthan State Sports Council fast-tracked infrastructure improvements for the 2026 season.

LED Floodlights

Old halogen lights have been replaced with energy-efficient LED systems. These meet 4K broadcast standards and provide better illumination during night matches.

Safety and Evacuation

Major upgrades were implemented to comply with international fire safety and life-evacuation norms. Emergency exits and signage have been improved significantly.

Upgraded Amenities

Washrooms across stands were renovated. New lifts were installed in the pavilion area. Seating comfort has also been improved in several blocks.

Live Music Stage

A unique 2026 addition introduced by the Rajasthan Royals is a dedicated stage inside the stadium. Local Rajasthani folk artists perform during match intervals, blending cricket with cultural celebration.

Cricket Academy

The stadium complex includes a modern academy with 28 rooms, a gymnasium, restaurant facilities, and conference halls. It supports grassroots development alongside professional training.

5. Sawai Mansingh Stadium Ticket Pricing

Ticket prices are structured to remain accessible while offering premium experiences.

Student Special

Designated Blocks –  ₹500

General Admission

East / West Stands –  ₹800 – ₹1,500

Premium Seating

North / South Upper Tiers –  ₹2,000 – ₹5,000

VIP / Executive Boxes

Pavilion Boxes –  ₹6,000 – ₹25,000

Tickets are primarily sold through BookMyShow and Paytm Insider. Rajasthan Royals often provide early access to registered “Super Fans” for home games.

High-demand matches tend to sell out quickly.

6. Prohibited Items and Guidelines

Security protocols are strict.

Strictly Banned: Bags, power banks, coins, umbrellas, helmets, professional cameras, and outside food.

Allowed: Mobile phones and wallets only.

Digital Entry

QR-code-based digital entry is now standard. Ensure your phone is fully charged or carry a printed ticket copy.

Climate Tip

March and April matches can be extremely hot during the day, with temperatures dropping slightly at night. For February fixtures, especially during the T20 World Cup, carrying a light jacket for the second innings is advisable.

Hydration is important during afternoon matches.

Major Events 2026

T20 World Cup 2026

Hosted key group-stage matches in February, drawing global attention back to Jaipur.

IPL 2026

After playing their first three home games in Guwahati, the Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to return to Jaipur for their final four home league matches starting mid-April 2026.

The return to SMS often marks a shift in crowd intensity, with Jaipur fans filling the stands in pink and blue.

Conclusion

Sawai Mansingh Stadium is not the biggest or newest cricket venue in India. But it carries something more enduring — legacy and identity.

With modern lighting, improved safety systems, expanded seating, and a cultural twist through live performances, SMS blends tradition with contemporary upgrades.

For Rajasthan Royals supporters, this ground is not just a venue. It is home — royal, historic, and fiercely passionate.
